July WARDIAN of the Month: Miss Bee Haven

By | WARDian of the Month | No Comments

Miss Bee Haven

What did you do for your 47th birthday?

If the answer is discover an awesome full contact sport, fly through fresh meat training, take on the extremely demanding role of Bout Coordinator and any other task the league can throw at you and STILL come out smiling , ready for more… all while living the life of a FIFO goddess:

Then your name would likely be Miss Bee Haven!

Missy has risen to every challenge Roller Derby has throw at her in her first year, both physically and mentally, proving an inspiration to her league mates. She has quickly made herself a vital part of WARD’s workings. From fresh face, to fresh meat, to fast and furious in under a year: pretty impressive by any standard!

Between directing preparations for the Great Smacksby and flying back out to the great beyond for another swing, we distracted Missy with a few questions about herself…

June WARDian of the Month: Booty Blocking Badges

By | WARDian of the Month | No Comments

Booty Blocking BadgesMore and more WA Roller Derby is noticing a trend amongst our members. Our army of NSO’s and volunteers grows by the day and the spirit of participation burns brightly in our league. This month’s WARDian is the incredible lady that has been coordinating both these groups to fill the multitudes of positions our skaters rely on to promote and staff WARD’s bouts, scrimmages and training sessions.

Badges has shown immense grace under fire in stepping into to help in two demanding roles, while still finding time to live up to her Booty Blocking name on the track- please believe me that nothing moves this skater from her position and when she checks you…you stay checked! Her team mates describe her as an “absolute legend”, “amazing” and as “generally rocking it”.

The league is incredibly lucky to have her and we are all grateful for her enormous efforts. We look forward to having her pass on the volunteer position at the upcoming AGM to a fresh face, allowing Badges to focus on her NSO-ing passion.

Before Badges could run off to continue working her socks off to keep those volunteer fires burning until then, we fired off a few quick questions at her:

Bout of Thrones: Winter is coming

By | Bout Reviews | No Comments

Winter arrived!

On a chilly Saturday night in June, the hordes flooded the gates of Kingsway Indoor Stadium to witness the battle unfold between the proud houses of Sonic Doom and the Electric Screams.

Dressed in team colours and everything Game of Thrones themed: Daeneres, Brieens, Pirates and Dragons, the near capacity crowd enjoyed the hot food vans, the cold beer at the bar and a variety of market stalls before settling in to watch the Screams and Dooms unveil their new line ups, new uniforms and new strategies.

Bout 1: Bout of Thrones, Winter is Coming

How quickly this year is flying by!

It seems like only yesterday that the WOTS were jetting off to Melbourne to face the amazing SSRD Sirens and VRDL or lining up against the mighty Gold City Rollers to claim the first victory of the season. But before we could blink our home season is once again upon us.

With the chill creeping into the air we are waving good bye to the heat of summer, so it was only fitting that the theme of our first home game come from the great George R .R.  Martin’s classic novel of royalty, battle and ice. Come June 8th we celebrate Bout 1 of the 2013 Home season: Read More

May WARDian of the Month: Duckie

By | WARDian of the Month | No Comments

DuckieThis month’s WARDian is something of a special one as it for a skater who wears many important hats both on and off the track. From nurturing our freshest of fresh meat as FM Coordinator (NOR), to liaising with other teams as Inter-league Communications Officer, to accomplished and respected NSO, to opening her home to host an entire seasons worth of after-after parties:

Duckie gives her all in all of her roles, both official and unofficial and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

With a Derby resume as impressive as this lady’s, it’s a wonder that we haven’t seen Bruiser in WARDian of the month before now. VRDL Derby Directions Bootcamp Helps WoTS Reach Greater Heights

By | News | No Comments

Gearing up for the bouting season kicks off with our Melbourne campaign only weeks away, the Wards of the Skate sharpened their team skills with a Derby Directions training session with the talented and knowledgable Ruby Ribcrusher and Beserker of VRDL.

Part of an intensive weekend long bootcamp, the team values workshop was a welcome off skates moment, but a valuable learning expirience none the less. WARD would like to extend our warmest thanks to Ruby and Beserker for their time and wisdom, and to the lovely folks at Altitude Real Estate for generously donating their boardroom facilities as the venue for the night.

Prescription Mint

February WARDIAN of the Month Prescription Mint

By | WARDian of the Month | No Comments

Minty in ChinaKnown as “Minty” to the WARD community, Prescription Mint was a burst of freshness into our league from the moment she set foot on the rink.

Not only is this little Fisherman’s Friend a hard hitting and speedy skating member of the WayWARD Rollers Team, but she has she proved herself to be an invaluable member of the WARD administration after stepping up to become Assessment Coordinator and coordinating the most successful assessment day in our history. Reports were that the huge number of skaters involved even enjoyed themselves.
