February WARDian of the Month: Penny!

Published Tue 03 May 2022

WARD's Penny #777 was nominated for WARDian of the month because of her great coaching sessions, and for hand-making our end of year aWARDs in the form of spectacular WARD-green, sparkly resin badges.  Get to know Penny by reading on.

How long have you been involved in roller derby, and how did you first hear about the sport?
I began derby in 2017 with Perth Mens Derby.  My son had started training with them and it looked like it would be more fun to join in than sit on the sideline watching for a couple of hours!

When you're not at derby training, what could we find you doing on a normal day?
At work or driving my kids around! I work in the disability industry so my days are never dull, and I am lucky enough to have some amazing colleagues that make the hard work worthwhile.

How did you come up with your derby name?
Have you seen my resting face 🤔

What's an interesting thing about you that's NOT roller derby related?
During my crazy uni days, I managed to work my way into a short film about the end of the world, called 6.

What is a roller derby goal you are working towards right now?
Covering the outside line on the apex - it just does not seem to get easier!

Tell us about a tough moment you've overcome in derby, or when you've played a hard games in which you've accomplished some small goals.
Playing the VRDL C team was so tough but super rewarding. They were all lovely whilst completely thrashing us but gave lots of tips and congratulated us on our small wins. It was a really great learning opportunity for the team and I think we all came away happy to try out some of the strategies we saw!

Who do you nominate as our next WARDian of the Month?
There are so many people doing really great things at moment. Juicy has returned after her baby hiatus and is just smashing it (and everybody). Vector has created so much automation and always puts in so much effort every week at training. Then there are the new people coming up the ranks like Jester that jumped into reffing like a pro!
