March WARDian of the Month: Squeals On Wheels!

Published Sat 08 May 2021

How did you first hear about roller derby?

Like a lot of people... Whip It. I thought I'd be way too weak and fragile to play, but kept it in the back of my mind for 10 years, and when I started roller skating and going to skate parks, I thought I might as well just go for it! And I love it!

What is something that you know about roller derby now that you wish you knew when you first started?

There's a lot of skill and strategy involved! Watching games has already helped me learn so much about how much thought goes into everything, like calling off jams at the right time.

What is the roller derby goal you are working towards right now?

Passing my level 3 assessment to start playing scrims and home games! And learning how to take hits confidently.

What do you do to keep your derby brain switched on?

Lots of skating during the week, and chatting with the friends I've made at training.

Who in WARD is inspiring you at the moment?

Juicy! It's so nice to have her in my training sessions, she's humble and always happy to help us learn new skills.

What keeps you enthused about roller derby?

Supporting everyone in gaining new skills, the friends I've made, and hyping up people for events and volunteering.

Who do you nominate as our next WARDian of the Month?

Juicy, for the reasons above and more! We're so lucky to have her going through level 1 and 2 again at the same time as us.
