How did you first hear about roller derby?

I can't actually remember exactly where I first heard about derby, I just remember coming across it a few years ago and thinking, "wow - a sport on roller skates, here's something I could totally get behind!" The players were fierce and were nothing like all the other sports I'd seen. I'd always loved skating and rollerblading in my younger years, but I've never played a team sport in my life, but roller derby was something I could actually see myself doing. However, it took me a few years to get the guts to actually look into it properly - but I'm glad I did.

What has derby done for you?

Derby has been one of the most challenging byt rewarding activities I have done as an adult - not just physically, but mentally. As kids, we fall down all the time and we don't think much of it, we get back up and keep playing. That's why I love derby - it helps you push your boundaries. You think, "Oh no, I can't do that, I'll fall and hurt myself." Derby makes you go, "Yeah? So what? If you fall, just get back up again." Derby is a safe space where you can fall again and again, and no one thinks any less of you - falling is just part of the sport. If you're too scared to fall, you won't learn, so luckily we learn to fall safely! In a world that demands we always put our best foot forward at all times, learning to fall - and having a laugh while doing it - is a wonderful life lesson.

What is something that you know about roller derby now that you wish you knew when you first started?

I didn't really know what to expect when I first joined, but I assumed it would involve training once a week and playing a game every so often. I didn't realise that I would meet so many incredible people and it would end up being a big part of my life. It's not just about training and scrims - it's about people and the community. There's a social aspect to derby and volunteering is a key part of being a member of the league. Without volunteers, our league would grind to a halt - which is why volunteering is so important. When you put in the effort, there is so much to gain from derby, not just in terms of fitness, but fun, friendships, and a wonderful sense of belonging to something that is bigger than just you.

What keeps you enthused about roller derby?

Definitely the people, our league is such an amazing and supportive community. Seeing friendly faces each week and having your mates cheer you on really is the best feeling, even when you've had a rough day. And the freedom of being on eight wheels, there's always that euphoric feeling when you put on your skates and take those first few strides, it's fantastic!
