March WARDian of the Month: Vector!

Published Thu 12 May 2022

Vector is our league Head of Officials and has been a member of WARD for over a decade!  Vector was nominated for WARDian of the Month because of the effort he puts in at training each week, whether it be training up new referees or ref-curious skaters, or developing non-skating official (NSO) automation gadgets that are wow-ing people all over the globe.

Read on to learn about our valued league member, Vector!

How long have you been involved in roller derby, and how did you first hear about the sport?
I signed up to WARD 16/09/2011. I heard about the sport from a then Level 2 skater, who listened to me venting about the difficulties of organising "one last reunion inline hockey game" before throwing my skates out. I still maintain being in a long-term committed relationship does not stop you from needing to engage in regular exercise.

When you're not at derby training, what could we find you doing on a normal day?
I'm a software engineer, so you'll probably find me sitting in front of at least 1 (probably 2) computers, writing code.

How did you come up with your derby name?
I wanted something that started with the same sound as my real name, so I could hopefully get used to it. Roller derby back then also had minor as well as major penalties - so I figured since penalty calls will have a direction and magnitude, Vector was a good way to go.

What's an interesting thing about you that's NOT roller derby related?
My other hobby is Swing Dancing

What is a roller derby goal you are working towards right now?
My current goal is working on technology that I hope will bring the number of NSOs we need for a game from 9 down to 4.

Tell us about a tough moment you've overcome in derby, or when you've played a hard games in which you've accomplished some small goals.
Passing the "WFTDA Certification Theory Test" (aka "Test of Doom" or "Hellahard") for the first time. Back then only WFTDA leagues could administer the test (and there were none in Perth) - I had to make several interstate trips to attempt the test and I eventually passed it.

Who do you nominate as our next WARDian of the Month?
I nominate Bondie - no matter what she is putting her mind to, she always puts in her all and picks things up really quickly, and Jester - she enthusiastically jumped into giving reffing a go and handled it like a champ!
