October WARDian of the Month: Stryker!

Published Thu 31 Dec 2020

How did you first hear about roller derby?

I think like most people, I would have to say the movie "Whip It" inspired my interest in derby. I thought it was a full-on blood sport for ages. Which might have been the reason I didn't start roller derby earlier... or maybe that was what attracted me? I used to roller blade since I was a little kid, until I recently made the switch to skates. I have always had a passion for dangerous and expensive hobbies, derby was just the next logical step to upset the missus.

What is something that you know about roller derby now that you wish you knew when you first started?

Everything! There is so much you don't learn until you watch a few games or help as an NSO.

What is the roller derby goal you are working towards right now?

Learning some sick moves, meeting more of the crew, and to become a level 3 skater to play some games. Might go pro, we'll see.

What do you do to keep your derby brain switched on?

I struggle to focus on more than one thing at a time, in this instance, I think it works in my favour?

Who in WARD is inspiring you at the moment?

I would have to say everyone! Coming to training and seeing all the friendly faces is great. Everyone is always welcoming and positive - makes coming to derby super fun.

What keeps you enthused about roller derby?

Will definitely have to say making new friends and learning new techniques and skills. Even just watching other members skate is awesome, they are super tallented. Why be bored at home when you can go to training and have fun.

Who do you nominate as our next WARDian of the Month?

I'll have to say Ari, she always has an answer for any and all of my questions, even when I'm 100% being annoying. Going to the information day she had all the answers and already made us feel we were a part of the team.
